PRESS RELEASE:
Christ Church United Methodist Open Doors Ministry is
hosting a Senior Expo / Health Fair. This is a community
wide event. Everyone is welcome to attend and have their
questions answered by 34 of the BEST PROFESSIONALS IN THE
HEALTH CARE FIELD REGARDING LONG -TERM AND SENIOR CARE.
Many people are not aware of the expenses involved in
long-term care, and most have assumed that they will not
need such care. They are unprepared for these expenses, and
often the harsh reality comes at a time when they are most
vulnerable.
Planning for the unknown is vital, yet many adults chose to
take the “wait and see” approach when it comes to their
future healthcare. This can lead to disastrous results.
In 2008, the national average cost of a semi-private room in
a nursing home was $69,715 annually. With an average stay of
2.4 years.1 That is more than $167,000 per
average stay.2
Roughly 40% of those reaching the age of 70 are expected to
need some type of long-term care during the rest of their
lives; yet only 7 % of Americans have done any planning at
all for their long-term care needs.3
7 out of 10 couples will see one partner go into a nursing
home.4
Almost 50 % of seniors 85 years old and older have
Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia.5
76% of Americans do not expect to need long-term care. This
belief can be affected by a variety of factors, including
the assumption that family will take care of the
responsibility of caring for an elderly adult.6
About 40 % of people needing long-term care are under age
65. They may need chronic care due to a serious accident, a
stroke, or developing multiple sclerosis, birth defects,
etc.7
70% of all people admitted to a nursing home go home broke
within 3 months. 50 % of all couples are impoverished within
6 months after one spouse is admitted to a nursing home.8
THERE ARE SEVEN DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS:
According to the philosophy of the International Council on
Active Aging, the concept of Active aging is summed up in
the phrase “engaged in life” and focuses on individuals
participating in life as fully as possible, regardless of
socio-economic status or health conditions within the
wellness dimensions. Ageing within these dimensions of
wellness keeps people involved, alert, and enjoying a
productive life. The health and wellness industry has
identified these seven dimensions of wellness. They are as
follows:
SOCIAL, PHYSICAL, SPIRITUAL, EMOTIONAL, VOCATIONAL AND
ENVIRONMENTAL.
