The
Kentucky State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (KYSLTCOP)
in partnership with the Kentucky Initiative for Quality
Nursing Home Standards (KY IQ Group) is proposing a pilot
project which seeks to build productive partnerships and
promote “Best Practices” that occur in nursing homes across
the Commonwealth each day. The “Best Practices” will be
loaded into a database that will be accessible
electronically by providers and their staff. The information
contained in the database will be divided by topic such as;
wound care, activities, resident choice, staff retention,
training, resident and family councils, Alzheimer’s care,
etc.
In addition to highlighting and promoting “Best Practice”
the pilot projects will feature a facility to facility
mentoring component. The goal of this component is to
encourage a hands-on transfer of knowledge and skill between
a facility who has proven success in a particular area, to a
facility who is voluntarily seeking to improve in a given
area.
A meeting was held on June 24, 2009 to discuss the basic
premise of this project, and to gage the willingness of key
partners to participate in such a project. The meeting was
attended by, but not limited to; members of KAHCF, KAHSA,
administrators of LTCF, activities staff, nursing staff, the
Deputy Inspector General, the Commissioner of the Department
of Aging and Independent Living, the Alzheimer’s
Association, and the
KYSLTCOP. All those in attendance believe that this is an
exciting first step in promoting systemic change on an
industry-wide scale regarding the culture of our Long Term
Care Facilities in Kentucky. It is a unique opportunity to
dispel much of the negative attention that the long term
care industries regularly receive, and greatly improve the
lives of the residents living in our facilities.
By clicking here you will find a “Best Practice” form
developed by KYIQ Group. KYIQ Group has recently presented
several “Best Practice” awards to facilities across the
state. The Steering Committee for the “Facility Mentoring”
project invites you to submit a list of each practice in
place within your facility(s) that you believe meets the
standard and that you would like to share with others.
If you have comments or questions regarding this project,
please do not hesitate to contact Kimberly baker, State Long
Term Care Ombudsman at 502-564-6930, or Lois Pemble of KYIQ
Group at 859-940-1348.
We look forward to working with you to develop a
collaborative process to promote the many positive things
occurring within the long term care system in Kentucky and
to create opportunities to improve areas that could be
enhanced.
Most Respectfully,
Kimberly Baker, SLTCO
Lois Pemble, KY IQ Group
